It's difficult to watch this beautiful summer start to slip away. Sarah is busy packing her belongings for her return to school and Danny is in full Football Conditioning and Practice mode. Today was the school district's convocation for returning staff, so Deb spent most of the day in an auditorium surrounded by other region 4 teachers and certified staff, talking about technological literacy. I suppose that was what spurred the creation of this blog today. "If ya can't beat 'em; join 'em." Not that I have any delusions that there's a population of folks out there eager to read what's on my mind today. I just figured that if technology is the language of the future, I'd better become more fluent. So I'm creating this blog to become more versed in the lingo.
So back to my topic for today: The Farm.
During the past week I've reached the saturation point in gardening. I didn't dig, clear, divide, transplant or weed. I didn't compost or cut back. Nope. But here's what I did do:
I basked in the late summer sun in my chaise lounge in the back yard.
I tingled to the sensation of the warm breeze on my skin (as I was reclined in the chaise lounge).
I smelled the aromas of the lawn, the meadow, the flowers, the barn, the compost pile.
I watched the dragonflies dart above the meadow, and the swallows dart after the dragonflies.
I checked the size and color of the myriad pumpkins that are taking over the garden... the yard... the meadow.... If you've ever grown pumpkins, you know what I mean.
I watched the mammoth sunflowers finally bloom in all their height and glory.
I gathered yet more tomatoes and cucumbers. Want some tomatoes and cucumbers?
I thought about how much I'd anticipated this summer; the week at the Cape with all my family, the reading, the work, the gardening.
I also treasured every moment spent with Sarah and Danny, which made simple things like driving with Danny at the wheel, and stripping an old mahogany dresser with Sarah all the more special to me.
There is plenty more work to do as we prepare the farm for fall. But for now we'll just look and listen and smell and feel..... and think about what we'll do here next summer at the Lazy Sun Farm.
Peace.
Deb
